MELAKA: Melaka River & Beach Development Corporation (PPSPM) is currently planning to develop a floating market on Sungai Melaka here as a pioneer project next year.
State Tourism, Heritage, Arts and Culture Committee chairman Datuk Abdul Razak Abdul Rahman said a total of 10 modern roofed boats will be placed along 120 feet (30 metres) of Phase Two of Sungai Melaka and will be transferred to the water taxi station near Taman Lagenda after cleaning and beautification work is completed.
He said PPSPM was currently refining technical and concept work to implement the market and initial work has been done to obtain technical approval from the authorities regarding the site planning and design of the boats.
"PPSPM plans to offer 30 boats for the floating market, 60 business kiosks at the river banks and a floating restaurant as a new tourist attraction in the state," he said in reply to Low Chee Leong’s (PH-Kota Laksamana) question on the floating market’s development during the state legislative assembly session at Seri Negeri Complex, Ayer Keroh here on Monday (July 31).
He also addressed Low’s earlier question regarding Sungai Melaka’s function as an alternative transportation route, stating that PPSPM had introduced the water taxi service that was launched by Melaka Chief Minister Datuk Seri Ab Rauf Yusoh on May 16.
Abdul Razak added that there were two water taxis with a sitting capacity of 20, and passengers need to purchase their RM20 tickets or top up their payment cards at the Melaka River Cruise (MRC) ticket counter or at the water taxi.
Last Sunday, 2nd. July 2023, Melaka hosted the Dragon Boat Festival on Melaka river.
A number of 33 teams took part on this competition.

Datuk Seri Ab Rauf Jusoh officially commenced the urban water taxi service on Tuesday (May 16) night soon after launching the Melaka River and Beach Development Corporation’s (PPSPM) new headquarters at Dataran Pengakalan Rama here.
In his speech, Ab Rauf said PPSM has grown by leaps and bounds since it was established in 2005.
MELAKA, April 25 — The Melaka state government will organise a fishing competition and fish cook off as a proactive measure to tackle the fish kill phenomenon in Sungai Melaka.
Chief Minister Datuk Ab Rauf Yusoh said it would indirectly turn into a new attraction in conjunction with Visit Melaka Year 2024.
“The fish die not because of pollution and this usually occurs annually between April 21 to 23 due to significant weather changes that cause the water level of Sungai Melaka to drop and seawater to be drawn in.
He said the fishing competition and cook off will be held before April next year along the 5.4 kilometre stretch of Sungai Melaka Phase 2 till Batu Hampar, adding that it was a measure to conserve the ecology of Sungai Melaka, especially against the odour pollution caused by rotting fish.
“It’s a win-win method and we will ask Tourism, Heritage, Arts and Culture Committee chairman Datuk Abdul Razak Abdul Rahman to think of how to organise it,” he added.
Media outlets reported yesterday that thousands of dead fish were found floating along Sungai Melaka. — Bernama
Since the demolition of the Central Market in 1988, the Kampung Jawa area commercial activities have been on a decline.
Some efforts were made over the past years. Night markets were held over before the Chinese New Year period. Once there was a Disco stage at Jalan Kee Ann for revellers to enjoy themselves. In 2019, Kee Ann Food Street was opened. It lasted about 1 year before closing down in 2020 due to Covid 19 pandemic. It is still not revived in 2023.
It is about time to revitalise Kampung Jawa ( Melaka New Chinatown ) as another place visitors and locals to enjoy.
Vedromall by the River as a modern 4 storey air-conditioned shopping complex can be marketed as the main magnet to draw crowds here. An anchor tenant like NSK Pasar Segar, Village Grocer, Mr. DIY or ACE Hardware should be approached by /Vedromall management. Owners who have invested in lots at Vedromall should also assist by offering low rental rates to entice anchor tenant(s). Create a win-win environment to bring in tenants and visitors to Vedromall.
For Jalan Kee Ann, the Kee Ann food street concept though focussed on open air street dining, it can be rebranded to Kee Ann Walk. Instead of focussing on food and open dining, more stalls selling fruits, souvenirs, handicrafts and other wares can be incorporated. Visitors can dine in open air or just browse around the walk for souvenirs or handicrafts.
Furthermore, if they are tired of walking in the open air, just relaxed in the nearby airconditioned Vedromall. Jonker Walk has NO airconditioned shopping complex there.
During the festive seasons, special activities can be held to celebrate Happy New Year, Happy Chinese New Year, Ramadhan and Adilfitri, Dumpling and Dragon Boat, Merdeka and Malaysia Day, Mooncadke Festival and Merry Christmas.
It is about time that Kampung Jawa be brought back to prominence,
